LS belt: setup & care guide

How to position, fasten, and care for your Athkin LS belt, with illustrated fitting steps and practical fit checks.

Your Athkin lumbo sacral (LS) belt has a padded back panel, a broad stretch band, two adjustable pull straps, and a hook-and-loop fastening. This guide helps you recognise the parts, put the belt on, and look after it.

Know your belt

Illustrated LS belt showing the padded centre panel, double pull straps, and hook-and-loop fastening.

  • Padded back panel: the broad centre section with vertical stitched channels. Position it at your lower back.
  • Broad stretch band: wraps around your body and closes at the front.
  • Double pull straps: the two shorter straps adjust the fit after the broad band is fastened.
  • Hook-and-loop fastening: the two surfaces press together to hold the closure in place.

The illustration is simplified. Look for these same features on your belt:

Put it on, step by step

Follow the instructions supplied with your belt. If a clinician has given you individual fitting instructions, follow those first.

Three-step fitting sequence: centre the padded panel and close the broad band; adjust both side straps evenly; check the fabric, fastenings, and tension.

  1. Open and position. Release the short pull straps and open the main front fastening. Centre the padded panel at your lower back, with the broad band running around your waist. Smooth out folded clothing underneath.
  2. Close the broad band. Bring the main ends around to the front and press the fastening flat. Keep the back panel centred rather than twisted to one side.
  3. Adjust the pull straps. Bring both shorter straps forward evenly and press them onto the fastening area. Adjust gradually until the belt feels secure and comfortable; avoid tightening it as far as it will go.
  4. Check the fit. Check that the fabric and fastenings lie flat and that the belt does not dig in or restrict comfortable breathing. If it slips, rubs, or feels too tight, release it and refit. Ask us for help if you cannot get a comfortable fit.

To take it off, release the short pull straps first, then open the main front fastening. Avoid pulling the closed belt over your body.

Comfort & skin checks

A thin, close-fitting cotton layer between your skin and the belt may help reduce rubbing. Keep the fabric underneath smooth.

Check your skin after use. If you develop pain, irritation, persistent redness, or broken skin, stop using the belt and seek advice from a healthcare professional. If you have been specifically told not to remove a prescribed support, contact your treating team for instructions.

Wear time and suitable activities depend on your circumstances. Follow your clinician's advice where applicable; this guide does not set an all-day or overnight wearing schedule. The belt is not a substitute for assessment of new or worsening symptoms.

Cleaning & drying

Check the care label supplied with your belt before washing. Use the stated cleaning method and check whether any parts need special care.

  • Follow the cleaning method and temperature on your product's label.
  • Do not cut open stitched channels or remove parts unless your product instructions explicitly allow it.
  • Follow the stated drying method and let the belt dry fully before storing it.
  • Keep the fastening surfaces free of loose lint. Avoid snagging them on other fabrics.
  • If your label is missing or unclear, ask Athkin support for the correct cleaning instructions before washing.

Check before the next use

Inspect the straps, seams, panel, and fastening surfaces. If the fastening no longer holds, the fabric is torn, or any part is damaged, stop using the belt and contact us. Do not cut, reshape, or repair it yourself.

Store it in a clean, dry place away from direct heat. Keep the straps resting flat rather than sharply folding the back panel.

Common questions

How tight should it feel?

Secure and comfortable. More tension is not automatically a better fit. If the edges dig in, breathing feels restricted, or you notice rubbing, release the straps and refit.

Can I wear it all day or while sleeping?

Follow your product instructions and any clinician advice about when and how long to wear it. Ask your treating team if you are unsure about overnight use.

Can I machine wash it?

Use the instructions on your belt's care label. If they do not clearly permit machine washing, contact us before doing so.

My belt looks different from the diagrams. What should I do?

The supplied product instructions take priority. Contact our support team with the product name and a photo or order reference if available, so we can help with the correct version.

Need a hand?

Contact Athkin support for help with setup, fit, a damaged fastening, or an unclear care label. Include LS Belt and your order reference if you have one. For advice about symptoms or a prescribed wearing schedule, speak with your healthcare professional.

About this guide

The product illustrations and fitting sequence are based on Athkin's supplied LS belt reference images. General skin-check and support-care guidance was checked against Guy's and St Thomas' NHS information on lumbar sacral corsets. That resource describes a different support design; its washing method and wearing instructions are not presented as specifications for this Athkin belt.
